Full Court Transition Drill
Ages: All Ages Youth Middle School High School+
Purpose of the Drill:
The purpose of this drill is to teach the offensive players how to run an effective fast break by getting to their correct spots on the floor and running early offensive sets.
Instructions
- In this situation, player 5 outlets to our guard and runs straight toward the rim.
- Player 1 pitches ahead to player 3 who is wing running and player 3 racks the ball or finishes at the rim.
- Player 4 is filling the opposite wing.
- Player 2 is filling the opposite guard spot.
- Coming back, our guard immediately takes the ball out of bounds and finds 1 banana cutting back for the ball.
- Players 3 and 4 are filling the lanes on the wings.
- Player 5 is rim running and receives a pass over the top from player 1 for a layup.
- In this situation, player 1 takes the ball out of bounds and passes to player 2 who is banana cutting back for the basketball.
- Players 3 and 4 are filling the wing lanes while player 5 is rim running.
- Player 2 pitches ahead to player 3 on the wing.
- Player 3 attacks the basket and skips the ball to player 4 on the opposite wing for a transition 3 pointer.
- In this situation, player 1 is banana cutting back for the basketball and receives a pass from player 2.
- Player 3 and 4 run the wing lanes while player 5 rim runs.
- Player 1 pitches ahead and then continues to sprint to the ball side top of the key to receive the ball back for a transition 3.
Points of Emphasis:
- Outlet to the guard running a banana cut back for the basketball.
- All players should be sprinting up the floor and filling the correct lanes (wings to the foul line extended, big is rim running, guard with the ball comes up the middle, other guard fills opposite)
- Limit the number of dribbles it takes to get up the floor by passing ahead to the wings.
- Work on running your sets out of the fast break so it creates a natural flow in the game.
