The Defensive Cutthroat Drill and The Three Non-Negotiables!

In USA Basketball Coach Nick LoGalbo's Cutthroat Drill... the defense scores points by creating stops, turnovers, and drawing charges...

But is penalized for committing one of his 3 "non-negotiable" errors.

Of course, your defense's "non-negotiables" are likely going to be different than his.

But for Coach LoGalbo's Outer Third Defense... the "non-negotiables" are:

  • No middle touches, whether on a drive or a pass.
  • Maintain a position where you can point at both your man and the ball.
  • Find a body to either "sumo-out" or "hit-and-get" the rebound on a missed shot.

So let's check out Coach LoGalbo's Cutthroat Drill!

This video excerpt was taken from his step-by-step tutorial on installing the Outer Third Defense.

Really good video and drill. So you can have someone keep score for the two different colored teams, maybe make the losing team do suicides or wind sprints after? The only thing I could see adding as a non-negotiable is lazy rotating/not closing out on shooters. I guess 1-2 players on each team is good enough to rotate? All in all, this is great...will really ingrain defensive principles into your younger players. Good job Coach...really like this!
