2 Unusual Zone Defense Drills (For Any Defense?)
Below, there are also diagrams and instructions for the two defense drills in the video. These were the building blocks of a 2-3 zone defense that helped Coach Marshall win 738 games and lead the state of Iowa in defensive points per game eight of eleven years.
In fact, these are foundational drills for any defense that you teach. Your players improve lateral speed, lateral quickness, the ability to stop, and defensive closeouts.
Also, the defender forces the offensive player to change directions as many times as possible by half court. In addition to improving athleticism, it will feel much easier to stop the offensive player in a normal game setting due to the overload concept.
Additionally, the offensive player improves their ball handling.
Drill #1 - Full Court 1 on 1 With Turns
Instructions:
The offensive player and defensive player start on the baseline.
The offensive player tries to beat the defensive player down the floor.
The defensive player tries to turn the offensive player as many times as possible.
Once they pass half court, the defensive player tries to prevent the offensive player from scoring.
Teaching Tips:
- Turn ball handler - Make sure defender tries to turn offensive player as many times as possible before reaching half court.
- Sprint to recover - If player gets beat, make sure they sprint to recover.
Drill #2 - Full Court 1 on 1 With Closeout
Instructions:
This drill starts just like the drill above.
As soon as the offensive player nears the 3-point line, the player passes the ball to the coach on the sideline.
The defensive player sprints and touches the baseline.
The offensive player sprints and touches half court.
As the defensive player approaches the offensive player, the coach passes the ball to the offensive player.
They play 1-on-1 from there.
Al Marshall's 2-3 Zone Defense -- Video & eBook
As mentioned in the video, Al Marshall's 2-3 zone defense also helped the Cascade Cougars, where Marshall just recently retired, go to the state tournament 10 times in the past 20 years.
In 2018, both the girls and boys teams won their first ever state championship using Marshall's 2-3 zone defense.
