Steph Curry Shooting Drill -
Quick Shot Release

Here is a great drill to develop a lightning quick release while being able to hit a shot with a defender's hand in your face...

These are two deadly components to elite level shooting and scoring.

This is a clip from the Breakthrough Shooting & Scoring System with Jim Huber.

But before you start the drill for yourself...

Remember...

  • Really smash your dribble hard to the floor
  • This dribble should be slightly higher and into your shooting pocket
  • Go directly into your shot from the dribble
  • Keep your eyes up and focused on the rim

Individually, these might not sound like much...

But because getting off a clean shot often comes down to milliseconds...

Putting them all together can make all the difference in getting off more quality shots come game time!

Agreed with Jeffrey's comment to the reply, i.e., remove the dribble otherwise you're trading one good habit and instilling one bad habit.. of putting the ball on the floor. Best!

Scott, what you mention is a vital way to develop a quicker release off the catch.

While maybe not made clear enough, this is meant to speed up the shot release off the dribble.

I believe you should practice shooting quicker both off the dribble and off the catch.

Like the concept of working quicker release, but trying to break the habit of putting the ball on the floor before a shot.

Hi Alicia. None other than Jerry West, who had one of the quickest releases in NBA history, taught me this simple drill back in the 1970s when I was a kid attending Gail Goodrich/Elgin Baylor basketball camp. He would simply have a friend, teammate, or coach fire chest passes at him while he stood on the court, and he would catch and shoot as quickly as he could without taking a dribble. He told us that if we wanted to practice this alone, all we had to do was throw the ball off of the wall (in a gym) or garage door (in a driveway) behind the basket, and catch and shoot. I used to spend hours on this simple drill and ended up with an incredibly quick release. West, of course, was so good at it he could catch the ball, rotate it so that the seams were in the correct position, AND place his index and middle finger on either side of the air hole where the needle goes to pump up the ball. Amazing! I was able to get the seams lined up, but never figured out the air hole trick :-). Have fun!

Great Reaction Drill for the Defender to listen and then turn to try and block shot. Thanks like it...

Really like drill as can also incorporate not jumping to block shot....and also boxing out....so both defense and offense skills worked. Ty
