10 Keys For Early Attack Offense - Transition Offense After Misses

Coach Ryan Schultz produces some of the best offensive teams year in and year out. Many are familiar with his Hybrid Attack Offense that mixes dribble drive and motion offense principles.

However, Coach Schultz's Early Attack Offense is just as prolific!

Below, Coach Schultz shares some of his principles for attacking in transition off of MISSES.

  1. There are no spacing rules. Priority is on speed!

    2. You want to take advantage of a miss by using speed/pace to get down the floor so the defense can't set up.

  2. You do not cross the center of the floor.

    3. The fastest way for players to get down the court is a straight line from wherever they are on the miss.

  1. Best ball handlers handle the break.

    2. You want to make sure the break is led by efficient and effective ball handlers.

  2. If a ball handler gets the rebound, he can ignite the break.
  3. Players need to get wide to keep the middle of the floor open and spread the offense.

    4. The goal is to keep the middle open.

    Keeping the middle open allows the ball handler to attack and create long closeouts.

  1. Players should run the side of the court they are on when the ball is secured.
  2. If a non-ball handling player gets the ball, he is allowed one dribble before outletting the ball.
  3. Only the designated rim runner can go down the middle of the floor.
  4. The only time someone other than the rim runner runs down the middle is if you can make a win up the middle of the floor.

    5. A "win" is a clear runout advantage.

If there is no clear runout advantage, the players want to get wide while sprinting down the court.

  1. Pass ahead if available because it is the fastest way to get the ball down the floor.

What happens if you have a stacked side in transition off of a miss?

Because you do not want to cross the middle of the court after a missed shot, one side could end up with multiple players on the same side.

The lowest player in the stack simply runs baseline to the other side.

The 1-man will fill the spot the 2-man vacated, and everyone will be in the correct spots for the 4-out offense.
