Practices Should Be Messy?

I want you to check out this tweet from Coach Rob Brost:

"I used to think practices needed to be 'clean' or I wasn't doing a good job as a coach! Nope! Games are never 'clean' & there are always things that happen you didn't expect! Practice is a place to work on things that happen in games & games are NEVER 'clean' for 32 mins!" - @CoachBrost

What do you think of this perspective?

I know it's counterintuitive, but I actually agree with his sentiment 100%.

It's tempting to want to run the "perfect" practice where everything goes according to plan. But basketball (and life!) rarely, if ever, works that way.

And one of the keys to being a great coach is learning how to flow with the chaos and turn it into an advantage. Learning to adapt and creating order out of chaos is a great skill for your players to develop too.

That's one of the principles that Coach Brost teaches in his unique and incredibly effective "Uncomfortable Pace" program.

And it's also why this Racecar Drill that he developed (while ugly) is one of the best drills for improving your team's game performance.

If you haven't seen this drill before, brace yourself. It's frantically paced and your team will make a ton of turnovers while doing it.

But in the end, they'll be way better off on game day.

Why?

Because the pace of play during a live game will feel like nothing compared to this drill, and everything will slow down-allowing them to make better decisions on the court when it really matters.

And it's your opponents who will be overwhelmed and making mistakes due to your pace of play!

Use the "Ugly" and "Sloppy" Racecar Drill to help your team make better in-game decisions
