Lead Instructor - Steve Spiehs

Steve Spiehs was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, and graduated from Wood River High School. He then graduated from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln with his Bachelors of Ag. Science and Teaching Certification in 1998 and a Masters Degree in School Counseling from Chadron State College in 2009. Since 1998 he has amassed over 25 years of coaching experience in multi-levels of basketball.

He began his coaching career in Neligh, NE, where he worked with the Freshman, JV, and Varsity teams. He then coached at North Platte St. Patrick’s High in a similar position where the varsity team became C2-9 District Champions and 2002 C2 State Tournament Semifinalists.

Spiehs then joined North Platte High Girls Basketball Program guiding his JV teams to 140-61 and was also the Varsity Assistant Girls Coach aiding them to a school record of 19 wins in a season and an overall record of 142-86. Also in that time, North Platte Varsity Girls were 2-time District Runners-Up, District Champions, and made 2 State Tournament appearances.

Next, Spiehs became a coach with the Grand Island Northwest High School boys team. In 2017 he joined the Northwest Girls team where they were District Runners-Up three times, District Champions twice, Class B State Champions once (2019), and Class B State Semifinalists once (2020).  

Spiehs continues to teach at Northwest HS. He has found ways to continue in coaching by assisting with various teams and camps, as well as serving as a “Doing Sports God’s Way” Coach at the 2023 Nebraska FCA Weekend of Champions in Grand Island. Spiehs joins Breakthrough as a Lead Clinician in 2024 after many years of assisting.
